ברכות חמות לחברינו ינון בן-נריה, אבנר דה-שליט, דוד ויינפלד, צבי פירן ובנימין זאב קדר, חתני פרס אמת לשנת תשע"ט. הבחירה בחוקרי האוניברסיטה כזוכים בכל אחד מחמשת התחומים שבהם הוענק השנה הפרס היוקרתי הזה, ובסך הכול חמישה מבין אחד-עשר הזוכים, היא ביטוי נוסף למעמד האקדמי המוביל של האוניברסיטה שלנו.
פרופ' ינון בן-נריה, ממרכז לאוטנברג אימונולוגיה וחקר הסרטן, מכון ישראל-קנדה למחקר רפואי בפקולטה לרפואה, הוא חתן פרס אמת בתחום מדעי החיים – ביו-רפואה. מחקריו של ינון עוסקים בפיענוח הקשר שבין מערכת החיסון ובין התפתחות סרטן, תוך התמקדות בהבנת תהליכים מולקולרים ושיבושים במסלולי איתות המעורבים בסרטן ובקשר בין תגובות דלקתיות לסרטן. בין היתר, הוא הצליח לפענח את המבנה של אחד הגורמים לסוג של לוקמיה ופיתח פרוטוטיפ לתרופה המעכבת את התפתחות המחלה, זיהה את החוליה המקשרת בין דלקת וסרטן ועוד. בשנים האחרונות ינון הצליח לפתח טיפול שיש לו יעילות מרשימה לריפוי לוקמיה מיאלובלסטית חריפה. ינון זוכה להערכה עצומה מעמיתיו ומתלמידיו. הוא פעיל מאד בניהול אקדמי, ובכלל זה הוא מכהן בתפקיד סגן דיקן למחקר בפקולטה לרפואה, מנהל משותף של בית-הספר לתלמידי מחקר המשותף למוסדות העיר ברלין, האוניברסיטה העברית והטכניון, ועוד.
ד"ר דוד וינפלד, מהחוג לספרות עברית, הפקולטה למדעי הרוח, הוא חתן פרס אמת בתחום תרבות ואמנות – תרגום שירה וספרות. דוד עוסק במחקר הפרוזה העברית במחצית השנייה של המאה ה-19 ושירה עברית חדשה. דוד זוכה להערכה רבה על פעילותו הנרחבת בתחום התרגום של פרוזה ושירה, ובכלל זה תרגום מפולנית (לרבות תרגום שיריה של ויסלבה שימבורסקה), מיידיש ומאנגלית. בזכות הצטיינותו בתחום התרגום לעברית של שירה, יש לדוד השפעה גדולה על התפתחות השירה הישראלית.
פרופ' צבי פירן, ממכון רקח לפיזיקה, הפקולטה למתמטיקה ולמדעי הטבע, הוא חתן פרס אמת בתחום מדעים מדויקים – פיזיקה וחלל. צבי הוא אחד החוקרים המובילים בעולם באסטרופיזיקה, בתחומים כמו חורים שחורים ומבנה היקום. צבי פרסם למעלה מ-400 מאמרים. הוא תרם תרומה מכרעת להבנת הבזקי קרינת הגאמה (ההתפוצצויות החזקות ביותר המתרחשות ביקום), ובתחום היחסות הכללית. צבי חינך דור שלם של אסטרופיזיקאים שמציב כיום את ישראל בראש המפה העולמית של האסטרופיזיקה התיאורטית. הוא האסטרופיסיקאי היחיד שזכה עד כה בשני מענקי Advanced ERC של האיחוד האירופאי. צבי גם שותף לייסוד של בית ספר החורף לפיסיקה עיונית במכון ללימודים מתקדמים. צבי גם כיהן בהצלחה בתפקיד דיקן בית הספר למינהל עסקים והוא פעיל מאד בניהול אקדמי.
פרופ' אבנר דה-שליט, מהמחלקה למדע המדינה בפקולטה למדעי החברה, הוא חתן פרס אמת בתחום מדעי החברה – מדעי המדינה ואסטרטגיה. אבנר פרסם שמונה ספרים ועשרות מאמרים, שביססו את מעמדו כאחד מבכירי הפילוסופים הפוליטיים בני זמננו. הוא תרם תרומה מכרעת למחקר בתחומים: תיאוריה פוליטית ירוקה, חובות לדורות הבאים, עוני ומוחלשות, ופילוסופיה פוליטית של העיר. אבנר הוא גם מורה מצטיין, נערץ על-ידי תלמידיו הרבים, ואשר גם זכה להנחות עשרות תלמידי מחקר מעולים. הוא פעיל מאד בתחום הניהול האקדמי, ובין היתר כיהן בהצלחה רבה בתפקידי ראש המחלקה למדע המדינה ודיקן הפקולטה למדעי החברה, היה שותף מוביל להקמת תכניות הלימודים ב-פכ"מ וגלוקל (לימודי פיתוח), והוא פעיל מאד בהנחלת התיאוריה הפוליטית מהלכה למעשה.
פרופ' (אמריטוס) בנימין זאב קדר מהחוג להיסטוריה, הפקולטה למדעי הרוח, זכה בפרס אמת בתחום מדעי הרוח – היסטוריה כללית. בני הוא מומחה בעל שם עולמי בתחום מסעי הצלב. מחקריו עוסקים, בין היתר, בהיסטוריה התרבותית של ממלכת ירושלים הפראנקית, ובהיבטים מגוונים של ימי הביניים באירופה, תוך השוואה בין תרבויות שונות. בני עוסק גם בחקר תצלומי אוויר, מימי מלחמת העולם הראשונה ואילך, כמקור היסטורי. בני עסק בהצלחה רבה בניהול אקדמי באוניברסיטה ומחוצה לה, ובכלל זה ייסד את בית הספר להיסטוריה, וכיהן כיו"ר הרשות לתלמידי מחקר וניהל את המכון ללימודים מתקדמים.

Warm congratulations to our faculty members, Yinon Ben-Neriah, Tsvi Piran, Avner De-Shalit, and Benjamin Z. Kedar, for winning the prestigious 2019 EMET prize. The selection of our faculty members as laureates in all five fields in which prizes are awarded, and five out of the overall eleven winners this year, is yet another indication of the leading position of the Hebrew University.
Prof. Yinon Ben-Neriah from the Immunology and Cancer Research Department, IMRIC, Faculty of Medicine, has won the EMET prize in Life Sciences—Bio-Medicine. Yinon studies cancer development and therapy. Among his main achievements are: determination of the structure of Bcr-Abl, one of the earliest-discovered onco-proteins and developing a prototype targeted cancer therapy based on Bcr-Abl inhibition; deciphering key components in the signaling pathway of NF-kB and Wnt, having a major impact in cancer; identifying NF-kB as the first molecular link between inflammation and cancer; identifying a new type of low grade, smoldering inflammation (parainflammation) prevailing in many human cancer types, and the development of a new class of small molecule kinase inhibitors with profound therapeutic effect in a mouse model of aggressive human leukemia. One of these inhibitors has already been approved by the FDA for clinical trial. Yinon is highly appraised by his colleagues and students. He is extensively involved in academic administration, including serving as Vice-Dean for Research at the Faculty of Medicine, and acting as co-director of the SignGene joint PhD School for Berlin Institutes, the Hebrew University, and the Technion.
Prof. Tsvi Piran, from the Racah Institute of Physics, the Faculty of Sciences, won the EMET prize in Exact Sciences—Physics and Space. Tsvi is among a handful of internationally leading scholars in astrophysics, in areas ranging from gravitation, black holes and the structure of the universe. He has published more than 400 articles. He has made important contributions to the understanding of the theory of gamma-ray bursts, a subject on which he is the world’s foremost expert, as well numerical relativity, gravitational waves, and quantum gravity. Tsvi has received many accolades and he is the only astrophysicist who has merited two advanced ERC grants from the EU. He has also contributed greatly to the academic community. He has had a tremendous impact on a variety of subjects in theoretical physics through his organization of the Jerusalem Winter Schools and our Institute of Advanced Studies. Furthermore, Tsvi successfully served as Dean of our School of Business Administration.
Dr. David Winfeld, from the department of Hebrew Literature, the Faculty of Humanities, has won the EMET prize in the field of Culture and Art—Translation. David studies Hebrew Literature of the second part of the 19th Century and Modern Hebrew poetry. David is highly appraised for his extensive work in translating to Hebrew poetry and prose from Polish, Yiddish, and English. His excellent work in translating poetry substantially influenced the development of Israeli poetry.
Prof. Avner de-Shalit, from the Department of Political Science at the Faculty of Social Sciences, received the EMET prize in Social Sciences. Avner has published eight books and dozens of articles, that have formed his position as one of the leading contemporary political philosophers. He made substantial contributions in the fields of Green Political Theory, Obligations towards Future Generations, the Poor and Disadvantaged, and Urban Political Philosophy. Avner is also a wonder as a teacher. He is a leader in academic life, successfully having served as Department Head and then as Dean, and played a central role in forming the teaching programs in PPE and Glocal—Development Studies. He is also involved in converting his political ideas from theory to practice. Avner won the prize together with Azar Gat from Tel-Aviv University.
Prof. (emeritus) Benjamin Z. Kedar from the Department of History at the Faculty of Humanities has won the EMET prize in Humanities—history. Prof. Kedar is a world expert in the study of the Crusades. His research covers different periods and cultures, with an emphasis on the European Middle Ages, comparing different civilizations, utilizing a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods. He also studies the cultural history of the Frankish Kingdom of Jerusalem. He successfully fulfilled various leadership positions at the Hebrew University, including the establishment of the School of History, head of the Research Students Authority and director of our Institute of Advanced Studies.
